US President Barack Obama's meeting with Tibatan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, saying the move had damaged relations between the two countries.

Obama on Saturday  met the Dalai Lama at the White House, away from the Oval Office where presidents traditionally meet world leaders.

The Dalai Lama, who is living in exile since 1959, says he is peacefully seeking rights for Tibetans and accepts Chinese rule. But China insists that he is a "splittist" bent on dividing the country.

"We demand the US side to seriously consider China's stance, immediately adopt measures to wipe out the baneful impact, stop interfering in China's internal affairs and cease to connive and support anti-China separatist forces that seek 'Tibet independence'," Ma said.
A meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama last year, along with Washington's decision to supply weapons to Taiwan had ended up causing year-long friction.

China had called off all military contacts, but they were resumed recently with high level defence officials from both sides visiting each other.
